That’s cool. I agree that it’s not as portable as some other options, but it wouldn’t be able to do what it does if it was.

I would actually recommend Spiral Linux if somebody new wanted to go with Debian. It’s the Debian analog to Endeavor.

Ah! I actually meant to do that (saw that on another post), but the second to last Deck update broke Decky Loader’s injection sequence, so I forgot about it in the meantime.

ETA: the latest Deck update corrected that issue, and Decky works fine, now.

And you’re entitled to your opinion. I also have small hands, and I don’t find its size or weight to be a problem for me.

I got a 1st Gen 3DS second hand some time ago. What I like:

• Pokemon, Zelda, and Animal Crossing.
• The 3D effect and dual cameras are neat, though a little gimmicky.

What I don’t like:

• The heavy reliance upon internet connectivity. I can’t change the details of the account on it without losing access to the downloaded games. I can’t even change it anyway, because the online store is closed.
• The control stick sucks. It’s good for a very flat control stick, but it doesn’t feel nice to use.
• Proprietary power connector.
• The viewing angle on the screen is pretty shallow.

I have a Steam Deck, and it’s just better in all respects. I get that it’s comparing a very new device against an old device, but I don’t really see a reason to pull out the 3DS when I could have a better experience on the SD.

This is a very good point, and it’s one of the reasons I don’t use my old laptop as an always-on server.

There’s still some crackling audio on resume from suspend, occasionally. Would love to see that bug ironed out completely.

Plasma has a Win 11 menu clone as well, iirc. I forget what it’s called.

Oh, so it’s not just me either. It’s one of the reasons I’ll never install Ubuntu.

No idea! It certainly had that screen, but I can’t recall if it was necessary. I’ll have to get my GBC out and see. It’s pretty smeary on my GBA.

Look into:

• Bazzite (Fedora Atomic)
• Nobara (Fedora)
• ChimeraOS (Arch, AMD-only)
• Garuda (Arch)

All are preconfigured for gaming. Bazzite and Nobara use the fsync kernel, not sure what Chimera uses, and Garuda uses the zen kernel.

Otherwise, Arch is still the most popular choice for gaming if you look at the statistics.

I see someone every now and again on !pop_os@lemmy.world asking about random Cosmic bugs, which is why I’m hesitant to recommend it to someone green.

I know Cosmic is there, but it’s not even in beta. I can’t yet recommend it in good conscience, especially for OP, who is new enough not to know the difference between a distro and a DE.
