A few years ago I had labyrinthitis and when I got over it I found I couldn’t play games or even watch other people playing games. Something in the way the things move on screen gives me really bad nausea and vertigo, like motion sickness I guess.

TV and cinema is no problem, it’s just games.

I personally struggle with audiobooks. I’m not one of those who claim audiobooks aren’t ‘real’ books, it’s just that for me, when I read a book via print (e or standard) there’s just me and the author. When it’s an audiobook, no matter how good the narrator might be, there’s now this 3rd person in the process and they might have their own take on how a character speaks or inflects or put emphasis on things I don’t. I just find it really jarring.

Forever War is fantastic - there’s a sequel too which is equally good.

I’m just finishing a re-read of Far Side Of The World so will be starting Children of Memory which is 3rd in a series and then if I happen to finish that then the new one by SJ Parris, Alchemy.

For the first weekend since the end of lockdown I have absolutely zero plans which to me translates as: weekend with my nose in a book, ordering take out.

Not getting picked up to go to the airport until this afternoon though

I have Conky on my desktop and do a curl to a known page on my server to monitor if a web service is up every 60 seconds. If it’s down, I swap to a blinking animated gif as an icon and play an alert sound.

My dad used to do this thing where he would pronounce any word ending in ‘es’ to ‘EZ’ so an innocuous work like ‘plates’ became ‘plat-EZ’. He extended this over time to any word with a plural so ‘roads’ for example became ‘road-EZ’. According to family lore, this started at a terrible Italian restaurant before I was born.

At increasing levels of my age I saw this as:

• baby - 5: This is clearly normal adult behaviour
• 5 - 8: My dad is a comedy genius
• 9 - 12: Alright, stop it now
• 12+: Genuinely considering patricide.

It’s impossible to not at least allude to the fact it exists in this context really. It’s either that or say ‘there seems to be no reason why chippies are closing’ which is clearly untrue.
