I think (?) it’s generally true that the root user should never mess with users’ files.

Imagine your home directory is shared across many systems on a network (my alma mater did this). It would be really bad if a sysadmin for alpha.university.edu removed a program, and suddenly your personal settings were removed from beta.university.edu — even though that computer still has the program.

This is one of the “UNIX on the desktop” issues — a lot is designed for a sysadmin/multiuser situation, and it has some gotchas when using it as a desktop machine (I’m used to/really appreciate the directory structure and settings management at this point, but it may take some getting used to).

Any chance you have a DMZ set up on your router?

On your router, are there any settings specific to any host (other than the server maybe)? For example, a static IP or a port forwarded rule.

Do you have a VPN on the phones? Can you traceroute from your phone to the server and post that? (I like PingTools for Android.) You should have 1 hop (you -> server, nothing in between).

Can you verify that you are on the same wifi including same wifi channel? Phone on 5GHz but Linux box on 2.4GHz, for example.

Some mobile clients make it easy to accidentally downvote. I sometimes see that I accidentally downvoted a comment from time to time.

Right, I just meant that you can’t sudo cat file > /dev/sda but you can sudo dd ..., because IO redirection isn’t elevated to root with sudo. I’m not saying anything too profound :)

Compiling a kernel yourself isn’t a big deal these days, especially with DKMS. Generally the type of people I’ve encountered who care about which kernel version they’re usiyare the type of people who are capable of compiling it themselves…

One caveat is that you will need write access to the drive, which probably means you need to run as root — can’t run that with sudo as-is, unlike dd.

Also a super useful tool for measuring real world bandwidth, both on physical media and over the network ( dd status=progress ... | nc ...).

Oh go fsck yourself (maybe that works better written…).

It’s also, in my opinion, the most verb-able of all *NIX commands.

I picked up an old HP LaserJet (with the Ethernet option) for free during grad school. It was a great printer — good CUPS/Linux support, reliable, cheap 3rd party toner.

It’s sad how the mighty have fallen. Would never recommend one for someone today.

What’s you network setup? Is there any chance that it’s connecting through he Internet instead of locally? For example: JF proxies through a VPS, and you’re connected to the VPS address instead of the local address of the server?

Also X often supported a different size viewport and desktop so the view would scroll.

A quick web search suggests that macOS (then OS X) got this in 2007 (“Spaces”), and Windows not until 2015.

This alone makes this GUI more functional IMHO.

Not something I have experience with, but have you looked at city/government jobs? You won’t get rich, but afaik a lot of them have stability and pensions — work there long enough and retirement at a reasonable age may even be possible (assuming things don’t go to shit).

Right. And if you want to self host with some geographic redundancy, it requires having friends or family with a good Internet connection who are willing to let you have a server at their place. Not impossible, but can be annoying.

I’m setting up a raspberry pi+HDD at family’s house, with wireguard to my home network. Fun stuff, but it’s not an off-the-shelf solution, especially when you consider that it’s not my Internet access, it’s theirs, so trying to be polite with bandwidth/data caps means it’s a bit kneecapped.

If it’s a case of needing ad-hoc WiFi from Windows, an Android phone tethered over USB will act as a WiFi adapter of sorts.

My carrier is Google Fi — one perk is that they will give you free data-only sims (up to 10 I think?) and you just pay for the data you use like any other data. I have used old Android phones in USB tether mode this way, and it works just fine. So, rpi+old/cheap phone should do the trick.

One fun bonus is that if you tether over USB it will work as a WiFi dongle, too — the failover from WiFi to cell should happen on the phone, transparently iirc. Not sure if that affects you.

Caveat is that I did this a while ago, and their pricing structure may have changed. Finished to be a great deal but has slowly become another carrier with not much to differentiate it…
